Background   2 comments

Increased population unemployment in rural areas and existence of economic opportunities in urban areas caused urban migration most of the people who migrate to urban areas soon find out there are few employment opportunities and end up working in the informal sector due to lack of necessary skills to secure decent jobs hence they end up living in slums.

Majority of them live below poverty line of one US dollar a day. Therefore poverty in slums areas translate in a poor education facilities. Which tend to demotivate children from attending school. Thus leading to rampant school drop out as result of poor education and facilities leading to poor performance. Also deteriorating situation of poverty in Kibera has resulted in relatively high prevalence of child labour to supplement the meager family income and therefore poor enrollment.

United Nations development report of 2006 were conceptualized as a united front of all nations of the world to venture into 21st Century with renewed vigor and determination to combat and arrest the spread and deepening of poverty. Hence achieving primary education ensures that by the 2015 all boys and girls complete full course of primary schooling. Kenya has attempted to implement this goal with considerable success since 2003 when free primary education was introduced never the less a number of hurdles still hamper the enrollment rate of school going children in Kenya especially the slum area like Kibera. This is because educating all children is still seen as insurmountable task given the large number of school going children and their are limited government school witch are coast shared and most of the family can not afford which have led to massive drop out. But since girls are most vulnerable than boys they end up getting pregnant and start their family at a very tender age or engaging vices such as prostitution, abortion, drug abuse or turn to street life.

Because of low level of parental education in the Slums this has became impediment against the attainment of universal education as little encouragement and support can be expected of illiterate parents to their children. Hence this has impacted negative in girl child as they will defiantly fall into prey of early marriages, abortion and unwanted pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases like HIV/AIDS, prostitution, drooping out of school, substance abuse; rising street children, single parenthood and over crowding slum areas.

After the need assessment through community dialogue Kibera Visionary Women self help group was formed to empower young single women and girls in terms of economic empowerment and capacity building.
